Biodiversity week is being celebrated at Sheskinmore this year with a visit from an old friend. Richard Nairn was the Director of BirdWatch Ireland in the 1980’s and worked closely with the first ranger John Hennigan to protect and secure the purchase of lands at Sheskinmore.
Richard is an environmental scientist and has written several natural history books. His most recent is about Dublin Bay, Nature and History (2017). In 2005, he published Ireland’s Coastline, Exploring its Nature & Heritage. He knows Sheskinmore and the Dawros -Portnoo area intimately from many years of visiting for work and pleasure. In 2007, Richard wrote A Nature Guide to the Ardara Portnoo Area of Co. Donegal.
The talk in McGlinchey’s on Friday will be a recollection of those early days when the drainage of the lough instigated the need to actively protect this area for wildlife.
